Community Effort: We have had to talk to kids here at school about not throwing their trash on the ground outside. As well, I made an announcement today regarding not throwing trash on the ground around town. Parents, if you would also have this talk with your students I would appreciate the effort. IMPORTANT for PARENTS and STUDENTS
1. Compulsory education laws: While many Burr Oak MS and HS students are communicating with their teachers and doing their assigned work, about 1/3 of them are NOT communicating and/or not doing work. a) Those not doing their work can legally be considered truant. We do NOT want this. b) The pandemic learner LAWS require 2-way communication twice a week. PLEASE check with your students to ensure this is happening. Start with them and if they are confused, email the teachers. Emails are posted on our website. burroakcs.org
2. ATHLETES: Academics first. If you are failing 2 or more classes you cannot play in a match/game. Some coaches might have higher standards. Games begin next week - read your handbook.

SPORTS PHYSICALS: 9 a.m. this Saturday, September 12 in the gymnasium - $15.
Send the student in with their signed forms, parents wait in the parking lot. Masks mandatory. Students can pick up forms from Mr. Hughes.
GSRP Update: We still have at least one, possibly two openings for preschool. If your are concerned about safety, we have taken measures to hopefully alleviate some of that fear. We will have a maximum of eight kids on site, extreme daily cleaning measures will take place, and it will be from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. each day. Mrs. Lemley has put together individual toy containers that get cleaned each day. Many learning activities will be outside, weather permitting, and you are welcome to keep your children home on bad weather days. Feel free to set up an appointment and come talk with the teacher (269-489-2213). She can help you get started on the paperwork if you decide it is the right situation for your child. We just don't want to see spots stay empty if there is any interest.
Parents: It is VERY IMPORTANT that you have your middle school and high school students answer their emails and/or complete their communications with their assigned teachers for the week. All students were sent a specific Google Form this week. This form is what is used for attendance. They must discuss subject specific material (ex. science, English, Math, Soc. Studies) with their teachers. If they do not check their email and do not fill out that form on time, it could become a truancy issue for you.
I would suggest that you have your children show you this COMPLETED form each week regardless of whether they are on campus everyday, two days, or 100% virtual. It is a state requirement and will be checked by our attendance auditor from the ISD.

Just a reminder. There will be no school on Friday, September 4th and Monday, September 7th.
What a great first day! It's time to get those young brains back in the groove and learning again.
Parents, we need your help. Below are some topics of conversation you could have with your children that will help them be successful this school year.
1. Remind them that class assignments have deadlines and to keep up with those or risk grades going down. (This is especially true for HS.)
2. All students in grades 3-12 will most likely have homework Monday-Thursday at a minimum. (Homework could be reading, writing, researching, worksheets, projects, etc.) HS will most likely have homework on weekends also.
3. If you expect your high school student to do work in school versus watching random things on YouTube, then please have that talk with them. Just being at school does not get a student good grades. They must do the work and have evidence of that work.
4. Copying and pasting answers from the Internet is not answering a question. Answers must be in students' own words.
5. Watching teacher videos is part of all lessons. If students are jumping right to the work portion of their lessons, then they are missing out on many learning opportunities. This can cause frustration, so please remind them to watch the whole video lesson.
6. Make sure students dress appropriately in regard to the dress code and the weather. While we have air conditioning in all classrooms, they are often going outside as well.
We consider parents as partners in education. Reach out to teachers often, ask your students to show you what they are working on learning, and set high expectations. We appreciate your help and welcome your input.

Here is the latest information on school bus pick up times.
The first bus pick up will be around 6:50 a.m. Which is approximately 20 minutes later than last year. Your students pick up should be about 20 minutes later than it was last year. Please have your students ready 10 minutes prior to their pick up time.
Please text or call the bus drivers as soon as possible if your student will not be riding the bus.

iPad Update: While we realize the frustration with the iPad situation, we still believe that Internet safety is a non-negotiable. Therefore, because technicians are in a different time zone and very hard to get in contact with, our appointment has been put off until Thursday afternoon. The earliest iPad pick could happen is Friday, but it will most likely be Monday. In the meantime, all applications are accessible on other devices; cell phones or other computers IF you have one.
Learning is at home this week. We are still meeting with families to write educational development plans for every student. Many have not yet picked up Chromebooks - please do so this week so your children are able to log on to determine if there are any tech issues we need to address. On campus learning and bus pick up will begin Aug. 31.
We have attempted to call every number we have on file for families to set up meetings. Some numbers have been invalid, voicemail full or not set up, or calls ignored. Please call 269-489-2213 if you still have not scheduled a meeting with teachers, missed a meeting, or have not heard from the school. We have limited appointment times so please try to make your scheduled time or call to reschedule so we can give that spot to others. And just a reminder, that masks are required inside the building at this time. Thank you.
Some Reading Street textbooks were not returned in June. If you are a family with a student in grades K-6 and are still in possession of a textbook, please drop off in the elementary office or bring with you to your back to school meeting. Thank you!
CHANGE: iPad pick up for K-2 students: We are updating our security for the iPads; therefore, we will hand those out during our meetings next week. You do not need to pick them up this week. If you have a scheduled meeting with teachers this week, we will make arrangements to get the iPads to you when the security is done being installed.
