National Honor Society - Local Chapter

The History of NHS

The National Honor Society (NHS) is an organization that recognizes outstanding achievements by high school students across the country.

Each chapter of NHS is governed by the national constitution of the organization, as well as by the local bylaws of the chapter. The National Council developed the national constitution, the governing body of national NHS chapters, while routine activities of each chapter are regulated by national office staff.

Requirements and Expectations

Students in the NHS are expected to display excellence in the following:

  • scholarship

  • leadership ability

  • community service

  • good character

  • understand the concept of civic involvement

These expectations have been in place since the 1920s.

Grade Point Requirement

All Burr Oak High School NHS members must maintain a grade point average of 3.5.

Eleventh and twelfth graders can join this organization by applying or by invitation.

 Application/Invitation must be submitted by the last Friday of October.
